109 Geese Put To Death in Bend, Oregon

Why? Because the locals thought that the goose population’s numbers were too high and that there was too much goose poo on the ground. They loaded the Canada Geese into garbage can sized containers and then gassed them.

Locals are having a memorial service for the geese at the park to mourn the loss of the geese. Isn’t that just a bit awful and hypocritical – having the killers mourn the loss of the geese that they, you know, killed? To be fair, certainly not everyone in the town wanted this to be the solution to their goose problem.

The town did try other ways of getting rid of the geese but their methods seemed kind of ridiculous when I read them. The article says that, “Those methods included chasing the geese with dogs, shooting at them with paintball guns and putting oil on goose eggs to prevent them from hatching.”

I’m so sick of wildlife issues being solved with mass deaths. Seriously, shooting paint balls at them?! That’s a method of wildlife management?! Hardly. Maybe they should have talked to the countless golf courses that have solved this problem without resorting to violence or an animal welfare organization that could have helped them with their issue. This just makes me so furious.

What a barbaric nation we are ! I am so sick of this type of thing – and unfortunately, it is not an isolated incident. Year after year, people complain about goose poo as if it is a nuclear weapon. To them, a pristine lawn is more valuable than an animal's life.

Take a stroll through Drake park or worse, try to find a place to sit and hang out without sitting in goose feces or being harassed by these residents. They hiss and snap at kids, pilfer your lunch and crap everywhere. They are neither native nor wild and did a tremendous job of feeding many out of work or homeless Deschutes County humans. Kudos, Bend Park and Rec, there are a lot more geese!!

  • JCN40

Whatever, Donna. What gated community do you live in? Resident geese are a proven nuisance, both aesthetically and environmentally. Their crap raises nitrogen levels in water and encourages algae growth while they continually graze the riparian foliage down to nothing. Ever eat chicken? Or fish? Or beef? Those are raised explicitly for food in a horrible existence, far more barbaric than what these geese experienced. But you probably only eat organic produce raised in an idyllic forest while being watered and tended to by pixies.

Wake up JCN40 and realize that there are more humane ways to deal with the problem. Putting oil on their eggs?? As stated earlier the golf courses have learned to deal with them and so should everyone else. Killing them with carbon dioxide and then feeding them to the poor is a bit over the top . You sound like some hick-town roughneck who would stop their vehicle on a back road for roadkill.

  • JCN40

Any suggestions Gmcno1? I'll acknowledge the egg oiling seemed a bit brutal but the extermination was right, and done humanely. How do the golf courses where you live “deal” with them? The geese should overrun golf courses!! You people are pansies as much as I'm a “hick town roughneck”, maybe you meant redneck, but who cares. Even the author is uneducated to know that they aren't “Canadian geese”. These birds have never been close to Canada, but they are Canada geese. Get it together before you criticize a situation you are completely unfamiliar with.

    Hi JCN40,

I would like to think that everyone would agree that a humane method of wildlife management is better than gassing geese or hitting them with paint balls. Here is some info from HSUS on humane alternatives to killing: http://www.humanesociety.org/animals/geese/tips

“They're not migrating, so it's not what geese should be doing,” he said. “They've sort of adapted a resident lifestyle, which I guess a lot of people want to do in Bend, too.”Trying to find a balance between residents' and geese enjoyment of the park is what Bend Parks and Rec said the main goal is.

Hello JCN40. I do not live in a gated community and I have ponds on my property which attract a number of geese. I love seeing the geese and so I do not find them to be a nusiance. And I absolutely agree that many animals raised for food experience a horrible existence (and death). That is why I am a vegan. I don't know why you are being so sarcastic – the fact that you acknowedge the terrible conditions of farm animals must mean that you are actually sympathetic towards animals. Why then are you so quick to defend the terrible gassing of geese? Shouldn't we always be looking for the most compassionate solutions?

the geese needed to be taken care of. lat year they created over $5,00o worth of damage to the bend area and have harassed park goers for a long time. The goose meat was used to help feed homeless and poor in the bend lapine area and the killing was done humanely. There are still plenty of geese in the parks for you to stare at.
