What To Do With Your Old Jeans

My new shorts that used to be my old jeans.

If you’re anything like me, you live in your jeans. You worship them. For their fit, their comfort and their ability to dress up and dress down depending on what else you’re wearing. I still have jeans from high school and college. I also spend endless amounts of time in thrift stores searching for my next perfect pair of jeans. Even though I have a zillion. At this point, buying new is out of the question.

But what do you do with the jeans that are too short, long, ripped, tight etc.? Some of them are too good to throw away and too filled with memories to donate.

Here is the rundown (Both problem and solution):

My Jeans Are Too Short: We all have those jeans that are just an inch or two too short in the leg. We feel like we look ridiculous when we sit down. What to do? Convert them to jean shorts. Above is a pic of a pair I had that I cut and now, wear all the time.

(Tip: When cutting, always cut longer than you think you need to. You can always trim extra fabric, but you can never grow fabric back. Also, remember to leave enough fabric to roll at the bottom.)

My Jeans Are Too Long: You can either take them to a pro and have the hem taken up a bit, or you can do the same thing as with the short jeans. Cut them into capris, shorts or itty bitty I can’t believe your cat let you out of the house looking like that daisy dukes.

My Jeans Have A Huge Rip Or Are In Some Way Too Damaged To Wear: The answer is Denim Therapy. An awesome service that repairs your favorite worn out jeans so that you can wear them again. They say, “No matter how extreme, we can fix any holes and torn denim.” Whether it’s a hole in the butt, crotch, knee, pocket or zipper repair, they can do it. And it’s quite reasonably priced. Certainly cheaper than buying new jeans. And more eco friendly.

My Jeans Are Now Too Small: There are two options for this one. The first is to donate. Free up space in your closet and send them off to a new home. The second is something I’m doing with a few precious pairs of jeans I formerly loved. Save them for if I ever have a daughter. Seriously, how much do you wish your mom saved her super cool 1970′s jeans?! I put them to the side and dream of someday.

My Jeans Are Now Too Big: Lose weight? You’re now swimming in denim. Either keep them for grubby household chores like painting or anything equally messy or donate. Donate. Donate. Donate. Share the love. Or if you need money, give them to your local consignment shop to sell for you.

You spend way too much money on jeans to just throw them away after they are outgrown or stained or too old. Recycling jeans into other uses is a perfect economical way to add personal touches to your home or shop.
