Increase Your Happiness: Adopt an Animal
My husband and I have been talking a lot about happiness. How do you get it? How do you maintain it? There are countless self help books out there just on the topic of happiness. Bad things happen. Even the small bad things can be enough to ruin a day. I wish I didn’t let them, but sometimes that’s just how it goes.
Which is why I thank my cats all the time for helping up my happiness quota. My cats relax me, help me focus on someone other than myself and give me a great deal of joy and comfort. In fact, there is scientific data backing up my claim that my cats improve my quality of life and happiness.
Beyond happiness, my cats also improve my health! Yep, it’s scientifically proven that people with animals are less likely to have heart attacks. Also, blood pressure and cholesterol are typically lower among those who share their homes with four legged creatures (and birds I’m sure.) Our stress levels are also lower.
Don’t believe me? Read about it here.
According to statistics, people who have one or more pets in their homes lead happier lives, are considerably healthier, live longer and weigh less than those who don’t. Pet owners heal better after surgery and have reduced factors for cardiovascular disease. Those are pretty good reasons to be a pet owner right there but that’s not why we need and have pets in our lives. The American Association of Human-Animal Bond Veterinarians explains the bond that we have with our pets as “a mutually beneficial and dynamic relationship. The touching of our pets and the closeness of the relationship with them is spiritual.”
Bottom line, if you don’t have an animal in your life, adopt one. If you can’t make a long term commitment to a companion, talk to your local rescue about fostering. That just means taking care of an animal until a forever home can be found.
